Duties of the Clerk-Treasurer

The Clerk-Treasurer’s Office is one of the most important and often times overlooked functions of local government. While the town council adopts laws and establishes rates, the Clerk-Treasurer and staff are responsible for numerous daily tasks such as; managing the utility accounts and billing processes, generating payroll for town employees, overseeing the employee benefit programs, managing the EMS billing, all accounts payable and receivable duties, preparing budgets, balancing bank statements, investing funds, issuing dog licenses and various permits, and a constant source of information. The Clerk-Treasurer is the fiscal officer, the keeper of town records and town seal, the clerk to the town council, and serves as the ordinance violations bureau to collect fines. This Office is multitasking, ever changing, and always ready to embrace the next challenge.

I am a lifelong resident of Cedar Lake, and a graduate of Hanover Central. After working over 7 years in the printing and graphics field, another opportunity arrived; to serve the people of Cedar Lake. I began working full time in the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office as an accounts payable clerk, assisting with bookkeeping tasks including budgets and payroll, and was eventually appointed Chief Deputy Clerk in October 2005. Nearly 10 years of knowledge and experience lead to my decision to run for this office to become your Clerk-Treasurer on January 1, 2008. As laws change frequently, the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office participates in continuing education through membership in the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers (ILMCT), and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC). This Office feels much like a second home to me, and I am honored to serve. However I cannot take the credit alone. I would like to thank and acknowledge my deputies and staff for all their hard work and dedication: Jill, Margo, Pam, Jaime, Jennifer and Sandy.
