A Message from the Police Chief About Crime in Cedar Lake
Dear Resident,
As we ride the wave of global economic uncertainty, you can count on one thing. There are those elements of society who are plotting and planning to earn money by depriving you and your families of cash, personal items other property that can be quickly converted into cash.
This notion is not new and in fact is as old as society itself. It is not relative to Cedar Lake or any community in particular. We know as a general rule, when our economy is humming along at a prosperous pace, thefts and burglaries decrease. We also know that the opposite is generally true. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.
We share the responsibility for our safety and the safety of our neighborhoods and community. Here are a few things that you can do to help do your part in ensuring the safety and security of your family, home and neighborhood.
Know your neighbors. Be familiar with vehicles and people who visit on a regular basis. If something looks strange or out of place or not normal, check on your neighbor or call police.
If you leave home, lock all doors and windows. Put interior lighting on timers set at different times in different parts of the house. Motion sensor activated exterior lighting is an excellent deterrent to the would be burglar.
When leaving on vacation, call the police station and ask to have your home placed on our vacation check list. We will collect special contact information from you and ask you about what lights should be on and when, what vehicles should be at your home if any, as well as emergency key holder information Officers will then keep a specific watch on your home by making periodic checks.
Always lock your vehicles in your driveway or anytime that you are not in the vehicle, regardless of the location, and never leave anything of value in the vehicles that can be easily seen by anyone who might look in. This includes cell phones and purses.
Start a neighborhood watch group. Organize a telephone tree. You know best who and what belongs in your neighborhood. You more than anyone else can spot something out of the ordinary. Report all suspicious activities, vehicles and persons.
You have my pledge that we will continue to do our best to help keep you safe and secure, but the police department is vastly out numbered and we can only be successful in our mission with your continued help and support. Together lets work pro-actively to prevent criminal activity and enhance the quality of life in our community.
